JOAD Programs

JOAD youth archery programs are as varied as the people in them. JOAD archers can learn about the sport within their own local club; compete in local, regional and national tournaments in recurve and compound bows, and even compete world-wide in junior tournaments and the Olympics (for recurve bows).

Club Leagues
It's common for clubs to hold their own internal tournaments, or have league play over a period of time. SOmetimes these leagues are used to choose a club team to represent the club at a regional or state tournament...even a national tournament.

Tournaments
Archery is a great sport to participate in. Tournaments allow archers to meet each other, have fun, compete against other individual archers or their teams. Tournaments can be hosted by clubs or recreatinoal agencies. Many states even hold state-wide "Games" to resemble the Olympic Games, that often include archey tournaments where JOAD archers can compete.

In the JOAD program, the National JOAD Tournament is the apex event...hosted annually around the country. Check the Calender of Events page for all the tournament schedules hosted or sanctioned by USA Archery.

Archery Camps
USA Archery will provide instructional archery training for archers ready for a fun and rewarding camp experience. Campers reside on-site at an Olympic Training Center (OTC) and the camps are staffed by USA Archery Certified Coaches who have received training in the BEST system.

The JOAD Camps are designed for any JOAD recurve or compound archer, wanting to enhance their current skill level.
The Open Camps are for any archers, regardless of age (must be 12 year or older to stay in OTC housing) or bow type, who wishes to further their current skill level.

Dream Team
The USA Archery Junior Development Team or Junior Dream Team was selected during the National Archery in the Schools Program National Championship, Junior Olympic Archery Development (J.O.A.D.) National Championships, 122nd National Archery Target Championship and the 2006 Junior and Cadet World Team Selection Trials.

The Dream team consists of promising young recurve athletes that finished in the top of their categories or were selected by USA Archery National Head Coach Kisik Lee. The team will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California once per quarter for an intensive week long training camp. Managed by USA Archery High Performance Manager Tom Parrish, the team has five USA Archery Coaches under direction of USA Archery National Head Coach Kisik Lee and Assistant National Coach Larry Skinner.

The first training camp was held August 20 – 26, 2006 with twenty athletes and four coaches in attendance. In addition to learning the B.E.S.T system and beginning to refine their archery form, the team participated in Strength and Conditioning, Sports Psychology and equipment programs. Each athlete was assigned a regional coach to maintain weekly contact and address any training issues that may arise between camps.

Junior US Archery Team (Jr USAT)
The Junior U.S. Archery Team consists of the top five male and top five female recurve archers and the top five male and top five compound archers in the Junior division (up to and in the year of their 18th birthday), as well as the top-ranked Cadet division (up to and in the year of their 16th birthday) archer in each of the four divisions.

The Junior Elite team was founded in 1985.

Olympic Training
There are a lot of people who want to make it to the Olympics, but every four years there are only three men and three women in the U.S. who qualify to go.

Keep in mind that the archery skill required to qualify for a U.S. Archery Team and to be competitive on an international scale is not developed overnight. It takes years of practice and training. It typically requires 6-10 years of training to reach the Olympic level (although a few people have done it in less time). A young archer starting in 2004 and desiring to go to the Olympics, should probably set his or her sights on 2012. If all goes well and they are ahead of schedule, they might have a shot at the 2008 team. That would be a bonus, but 2012 would be much more realistic.
